Swiss-UK: Agreement on Recognition of Professional Qualifications
SWISS–UK AGREEMENT ON THE RECOGNITION OF PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
The “Agreement between the Swiss Confederation (Switzerland) and the United Kingdom on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications” signed between Switzerland and the United Kingdom on 14 June 2023 and effective from 1 January 2025, establishes a bilateral framework for the recognition of professional qualifications between the two countries.
For SwissUK™ learners, this Agreement provides practical benefits by establishing a transparent process for the mutual recognition of professional qualifications, enabling learners to expand career opportunities in both Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It also reduces the need for retraining or full reassessment of qualifications in regulated professions, which have traditionally been dominated by Swiss public university training systems. At the same time, it enhances credibility when demonstrating professional competence to employers and international organisations.
SwissUK™ is an education system owned and exclusively implemented by SIMI Swiss, developed to combine the excellence of Swiss private education with the UK RQF system recognised by Ofqual (UK Government). Upon graduation, SwissUK™ learners are supported in completing the necessary procedures to obtain an official UK Qualification Reference Statement issued by an authorised representative of the UK Department for Education, confirming academic value, professional competence, employability, and pathways for further study within an international context.
Introduction to the Swiss–UK Agreement on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications
The Switzerland–United Kingdom agreement on the recognition of professional qualifications was developed in the context of two countries that each maintain independent, high-quality education and professional systems with long-standing traditions. The Agreement focuses on the mutual recognition of the academic and professional value of qualifications lawfully awarded within each system, based on the principles of transparency, level comparability, and respect for each country’s educational autonomy.
For cross-border education models such as SwissUK™, this Agreement provides a transparent legal and academic context supporting the connection between Swiss private education and qualification frameworks regulated within the United Kingdom. While respecting the educational autonomy of each country, the Agreement establishes a shared legal framework that allows the parties to apply its principles and conditions in accordance with their respective legal contexts and regulatory mechanisms. This supports a conditional recognition pathway in sectors subject to state oversight, helping the evaluation and use of qualifications become more transparent, clearly grounded, and lower-risk within an international environment.

Meaning for SwissUK™ Learners
For SwissUK™ learners, the Agreement may provide a strategic advantage in the practical use of qualifications in professional contexts. Learners not only hold a Swiss private qualification characterised by applied orientation and flexibility inherent in Swiss education, but may also benefit from qualifications or competency certifications aligned with frameworks regulated within the United Kingdom. This can expand the scope for comparability, recognition pathways, and practical use of qualifications in international professional environments.
Within the framework of the Agreement, the SwissUK™ dual-qualification structure may benefit from more favourable conditions when qualifications are assessed for recognition, particularly when learners seek employment in regulated sectors in both the United Kingdom and Switzerland. In Switzerland especially, many regulated fields remain closely supervised and are traditionally dominated by public universities in terms of degree provision, which can limit accessibility for cross-border private education models without clear comparability mechanisms.
As a result, the academic and professional profile of SwissUK™ learners is better positioned to “interact” with multiple admission, recruitment, and competency assessment systems. In an international labour market that increasingly values transparency and comparability of qualifications, the SwissUK™ model helps reduce uncertainty when learners demonstrate the value of their qualifications to employers, professional organisations, or receiving institutions.
Use of the SwissUK™ Dual-Qualification System in Switzerland
In Switzerland, state-regulated sectors (regulated professions) such as healthcare, legal practice, special education, architecture, and securities are subject to strict professional standards and, in practice, are primarily delivered and recognised through public and state-recognised higher education institutions. In this context, private higher education institutions that issue qualifications solely under a Private Degree model may face clearer limitations, as graduates may find it more challenging to use such qualifications when applying for professional licences or seeking access to government-regulated roles.
The SwissUK™ dual-qualification system introduces a different approach. Alongside a Swiss Private Degree awarded within a legitimate private education framework, SwissUK™ programmes integrate parallel qualifications or certificates within the United Kingdom’s qualification system, regulated and recognised under the legal framework established by the UK Government through Ofqual. This qualification component serves as an international reference point, helping learners’ profiles have a clearer basis when assessed in state-regulated professional sectors.
As a result, graduates of SwissUK™ programmes may have greater potential to use their qualifications when engaging with the Swiss labour market, including in closely regulated sectors where traditional Private Degree-only models may not meet recognition or comparability expectations. This is a distinctive advantage of SwissUK™ compared with many private education models in Switzerland that issue only a single qualification.
In a broader context, the Swiss qualification within the SwissUK™ model remains positioned within the legal framework of private education, where flexibility, market orientation, and internal quality are emphasised. The full integration of a UK-aligned qualification framework provides learners and employers in Switzerland with an additional international reference point when assessing level and capability. This is particularly useful in multinational business environments, where professional profiles are often compared across multiple countries and different education and qualification systems.
Use of the SwissUK™ Dual-Qualification System in the United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, the value of the SwissUK™ model is reflected in its ability to align with the national qualifications system and the UK’s recognition practice. The UK-framework qualification or certificate component functions as a “common language”, enabling education providers, employers, and professional bodies to interpret and assess the learner’s level more quickly and accurately.
In parallel, the Swiss qualification within the SwissUK™ system adds an additional layer of value associated with management thinking, academic independence, and an applied orientation. This combination helps ensure the learner’s profile is not confined to a single reference system, but instead reflects the capability to study and work in an international environment.
Use of the SwissUK™ Dual-Qualification System in Other Countries
In countries outside Switzerland and the United Kingdom, the SwissUK™ model demonstrates its advantage through comparability and explainability. In international practice, many employers and education providers do not assess qualifications based solely on reputation, but on how effectively they can be mapped against familiar qualification frameworks.
Combining a Swiss qualification with a UK-aligned component helps SwissUK™ profiles fit more readily into international evaluation processes—ranging from academic recognition and postgraduate admissions to professional recruitment. As a result, learners gain additional options and flexibility when moving across different labour markets and education systems.
Note
The information above describes the SwissUK™ Dual-Qualification System in the context of the Swiss–UK Agreement on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications, which has been signed and is stated as effective from 01/01/2025.
All reference materials are based on official sources from government authorities and the relevant national and regional qualification frameworks. However, under international practice, recognition is never automatic. Each receiving institution, country, or competent authority may apply additional regulations and its own assessment criteria. Learners are therefore advised to verify the recognition status and acceptance level of the qualification before enrolment.
